ABOUT THE DEPARTMENT :

The Department of History was established at the time of inception of the Sibsagar College i.e. in 1947. The Department was started initially with one teacher - Sri Amio Kr. Sarma. In the subsequent periods the Department obtained sanctions of additional. posts. The teachers who had served in the Depratment in different times were - Sri Prafulla Kr. Barua, Sri Mihir Kr. Barua, Late Muhi Ch. Gohain, Sri Sarat Mahanta, Sri Nirode Barua and Mrs. Mitali Borkakoty. The Department has been offering Honours/ Major in History to the students since 1962-63. The present scat capacity in Honours programme at at entry level of study is 50.

PRESENT FACULTY MEMBERS :

The present faculty position is five. The male – female teacher ratio is 3 : 2. Out or five teachers two have Ph.D. as highest qualification, one has M.Phil. degree and the rest are PG degree holders of whom one is pursuing Ph.D. research in Gauhati University. All the faculty members have been publishing research papers/articles in various books and journals and they have participated in various seminars/conferences/workshops at different levels. Two faculty members are University/V.C.’s Nominee to the Selection Committees of various colleges under Dibrugarh University in terms of – 1) selecting Assistant Professors for new appointment and 2) screening/selecting them for promotion to next higher grade/stage. Many of them are serving as Head examiner, Scrutiniser, Paper Setter etc.
