Sibsagar College, a premier seat of higher education in this part of the state, is situated at Joysagar beside the historic tank which stands testimony to the hallowed memory of Sati Joymati, the Ahom Queen of the 17th century. This college is located amidst a picturesque atmosphere, about 5 km south-west of Sivasagar Town, quite away from the din and bustle of town-life. It was established in 1947, coinciding with independence, upholding the aura of that awakening and has traverses a long way since then. Over the years it has cherished a proud tradition of possessing respourceful and accomplished faculty members and an impressive record of academic output. A posse of patriots and statesmen were its architects, some of whose names have come to be indelibly stamped in the annals of Asom. Their selfless and unflinching commitment had ushered in a rich heritage to this College. Special mention may be made of the founder Principal, Padmadhar Chaliha and his successor aho happened to be his son Paragdhar Chaliha. Initially, the college began with 86 students and 7 staff members at a hall in Sivasagar town. In 1952 it was moved to its present location where infrastructural expanse began to emerge, through the magnanimity of many of its cluster of patrons. It was initially affiliated to Gauhati University. In 1965, its affiliation was transferred from Gauhati University to Dibrugarh University as soon as the latter was founded. Its motto as printed in Assamese '' on the emblem stresses its mission, i.e. 'quest for light'.
          The sacrifice of some modest and humble souls of the neighbouring areas in terms of human and material resources, and the patronage of some other prominent well-wishers contributed largely to the growth of the college. Mention must be made of some generous donations of Late B.L. Lahoty, Late S.N. Tantia, Late D.P.M. Baruah, Late P.C. Boruah, Late K.N. Dutta, Late B.P. Chaliha, who donated the Haribux Lahoty Hall, the Bagri Hall, the Tantia Vigyan Mandir, the D.P.M. Baruah Bhavan, the H.P.M. Library and Museum later reconstructed by Mr. Jayanta Baruah, the son of Late P.C. Baruah and H.P. Baruah, Haliram Dutta Bhavan and a substantial amount of money to start building the college auditorium known as the M.C.B. Hall respectively. A very recent addition to these buildings is the J.P.C. Memorial Lecture Hall donated by Mr. Ranjit Chaliha and his family, a noted tea planter of Asom. The names above are only a select few from among the cynosures to reflect the generosity, co-operation and enthusiasm of those who had envisioned to ensure that the dream of establishing a College of this dimension which had incubated be concretised into reality.
          Special mention must be made of the selfless sacrifice of Late Padmadhar Chaliha who was the founder Principal of the college and also a famous litterateur of Asom. He was the president of Asom Sahitya Sabha, and popularly known as the 'Phulanir Kabi ' in Assamese literature. He was rather a connoisseur in the socio-cultural ambience of the Assamese people. Mention must also be made of Late Parag Chaliha, the son of the founder Principal and the next Principal, who shouldered the responsibility of strengthening the pillar of knowledge in the form of Sibsagar College at Joysagar. He was the real kingpin cum architect of this college and was distinguished by a rare personality of multifaceted nature and invincible courage and was rightly called the 'Seuj Konwar' - the evergreen youth. A litterateur, a lyricist, a dramatist, a composer, a sportsman and a leader - an institution in himself, he happened to be the President of the AGP and a member of the Rajya Sabha after his retirement. People like Late Muhiram Saikia, a former Minister of State, Human Resource Development, Govt. of India, Prafulla Kr. Barua, a noted Assamese film-maker and dramatist, Late Biren Borkotoky, President - Asom Sahitya Sabha, Late Dr. Bhabendranath Saikia, noted film-maker and litterateur, to name a few who immensely contributed to the growth of the College in its early formative stages by being a part of the dynamic faculty of Sibsagar College.
          The College with its strong infrastructure sprawling across 103 bighas of land, has been rendering its duty of disseminating general education among the populace of the entire upper Asom in particular and the people of the north-east in general during its enviable existence of the last sixty nine years by dint of selfless service rendered by its vast array of a band of efficient and most devoted faculty members. The College now offers both conventional and unconventional combination of subjects under 16 different departments with wide flexibility and option open for students which are evident from various details incorporated for perusal of learners who seek admissions to the College. Added to this, the College Fraternity have resolved to work in unision to acclimatize themselved to the contemporary paradigms and indices of Higher Education such that the learners find a conducive platform to work on their potential to respond to the dynamics of contemporary global challanges in a befitting manner.
